How to enjoy what you already have more

Buying new things is not an art. Maintaining the joy of what you already own, on the other hand, is. All you need is a change of perspective.

New purchases bring joy. For me, however, this is rarely of a long-lasting nature. I don't have the necessary small change to maintain the happiness hormone level purchase after purchase. Not to mention the tears of the environment. After two months of self-experimentation last winter and not buying any beauty products, my findings were numerous:

In order to keep my consumption on a low flame throughout the year, I had to get creative. The following tips have kept my beauty spending to a minimum and maximised my enjoyment of what I already own.

Look for the tutorials on your products, not the products from the tutorials

Nine times out of ten, new purchases for me are due to a make-up tutorial that used the product of desire. However, to get more out of the products that are already sitting on my dressing table twiddling their thumbs, I simply turn the tables: I specifically look for videos that use those products I already own. This way, I get new inspiration for possible colour combinations as well as application techniques and application options without having products constantly being held under my nose that I could still spend my money on.

Test the "Shop my Stash" perspective

Vloggers who want to try their hand at the no-buy challenge or offer content that saves you as a viewer money in the fast-moving market and is also environmentally friendly, shoot so-called "Shop my Stash" videos. The premise of such videos: Most beauty lovers already have enough products lying around at home that they could open a small shop. Regardless of how manageable your make-up collection is, you too can adopt this change of perspective.

And this is how it works:

Imagine your beauty products are on a shop counter. Now go imaginary shopping. Look at what you have, read the labels and swatch the products on the back of your hand. You might rediscover old favourite products that have long since been pushed out of your daily routine by the many new launches. In the videos, the content creators choose a product from each category and test new combinations with old favourites. With a little childlike imagination, it's actually quite fun.

Reorganise, rearrange and display

What I see is what I use. That's why I reorganise my beauty products at regular intervals. That way, I don't forget what I own, can sort out old and discarded products as needed and get a little creative with the storage options. I rescue products that have been neglected for a particularly long time from the dark corners of my drawers and display them prominently on my dressing table. I've put together a few unconventional ideas for make-up storage here:

Hold different shades and textures of one colour category next to each other. You'll be surprised at the new combination possibilities.

Another way to rearrange your make-up is to depot it. Not only does this save you space, you can also merge several different eyeshadow palettes into one and curate the colours so that the new palette inspires you at a glance. You can find instructions for depotting here:

Use your products differently

Have you ever used a liquid lipstick as eyeliner? Or used an eyeshadow as a highlighter? You can repurpose some beauty products to create completely new looks. The important thing is to make sure that products that are not normally intended for the eyes are labelled as eye-safe. Otherwise, it's better to keep your hands off them. A few suggestions to try out:

Use ...

  • Concealer as foundation and vice versa
  • Eye shadow as eyebrow powder and vice versa
  • Blush, bronzer and highlighter as eyeshadow and vice versa

Do you like the colour of an eyeshadow, but the colour intensity leaves a lot to be desired? With a few simple tricks, you can bring it back to life. All you have to do is work on your application: [[marketingpage:15139]]

Keep your make-up clean

One wipe. One wiping motion. And your powder looks like new again. At least the packaging does.

Your make-up also deserves a little respect and care. The cleaner your stuff looks, the longer you'll have that new look feeling. That's my official reasoning. You can find my unofficial, unfiltered opinion on neglected make-up products here:

Some of these tips may seem simple in theory. Almost too simple. But that's exactly why they are easy to implement and I promise: they work.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
