iPhone 12 rumours: is Apple making drastic changes to the iPhone portfolio?

A product certification allows us a sneak preview of the iPhone 12 portfolio. Combined with the most credible rumours, this results in an exciting outlook on Apple's WWDC. And there's a new Mac in the making, too.

«Notification Number RU0000048367» doesn’t sound particularly exciting when it comes to the certification and legalisation of goods. But Abid Iqbal from the news portal MySmartPrice took a closer look. Under «Name of Product», it says:

Smartphones of the Apple brand A2176, A2172, A2341, A2342, A2399, A2403, A2407, A2408, A2411 models (iOS 13 software version)

In other words: the iPhone 12, announced for autumn 2020, will be released in nine versions. At least. It’s unlikely but possible that Apple will have more devices certified.

Nine new iPhones this autumn

So much for the facts. There are nine models of the iPhone 12 in the making. More? Maybe. Less? Probably not. The rumor mill of the watch blog MacRumours believes to know the line-up: there will be four models, all equipped with an OLED screen.

  • a device with 5.4-inch screen diagonal
  • two devices with 6.1-inch screen diagonal
  • three devices with 6.7-inch screen diagonal

These sizes are surprising. When it comes to the form factor of the iPhone, Apple is quite consistent and doesn't make radical changes. But if we combine the regular Apple portfolio with MacRumor's data, we get the following line-up:

  • 5.4 inches: iPhone 12 Pro
  • 6.1 inches: iPhone 12, maybe in a 4G and a 5G version?
  • 6.7 inches: iPhone 12 Pro Max

MacRumors suggests, along with the 4G/5G split of the theoretical iPhone 12, that one with two cameras and one with three cameras might be released. Furthermore, editor Tim Hardwick seems to know that the smaller devices are lower-end iPhones. However, the lack of specs – in the context of Apple's market strategy, of course – is apparently compensated by offering it at an attractive price.

On top of this, each phone is available in a range of colours. This seems to explain the five missing models.

P.S. a new Mac

During the research, another notification caught Abid's eye. Apple has certified a Mac that the public doesn’t yet know about.

Last March, the rumour mill mentioned a new iMac. These rumours seem to have been backed in April. And in the run-up to Apple's World Wide Developer Conference, leaker Sonny Dickson speaks of an iMac with iPad-like design language.

Apple is hosting the WWDC between 22 and 26 June 2020. So we'll soon know for sure what’s coming. Hopefully.
