MarbleLympics 2019: Best sporting event of the year
The MarbleLympics are being held for the fourth time in a row. A tournament in which 16 marble teams compete for medals in 16 different disciplines. An unrivalled spectacle!
The competing teams include the "Oceanics". They are this year's hosts of the MarbleLympics and therefore automatically qualified. The top three teams from last year's competition will also take part in the race. The remaining teams had to compete against each other in a qualifying round and demonstrate their skills in four disciplines. Want to know which teams are taking part in this year's MarbleLympics? When and where will the MarbleLympics 2019 take place?
The official opening ceremony and the first competition will take place on 19 April 2019. The competitions can be seen on the YouTube channel of Jelle's Marble Runs. After that, two disciplines will be held each week and published on YouTube on Tuesday and Friday
Which disciplines will be held?
A total of 16 different competitions will take place. Some disciplines have already been confirmed, others are still being planned. The confirmed disciplines include: Underwater Race, Balancing, Slalom, Funnel Spinning, Block Pushing, Triathlon, Surfing, Trampoline. According to rumours, a hurdle race and a rowing race will also take place. However, these disciplines have not yet been confirmed.
Who is behind the MarbleLympics?
The creator and initiator of the MarbleLympics is Dutchman Jelle Bakker. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. This disorder made Jelle particularly interested in noises and sounds. This led to his fascination with marble runs. Different materials and structures in the tracks give the glass marbles their own individual acoustics. This drove Jelle to build ever larger and crazier marble runs. These are now exhibited in various museums or, as with the MarbleLympics, watched by millions of viewers on YouTube.
