Marvel Phase 4: Doctor Strange, TV series and finally Black Widow
Marvel Studios has announced its lineup for the coming years at a press conference. Among others: a female Thor, vampire hunter Blade and maybe mutants.
Marvel Studios has publicly announced its plans for the coming years. At a fan and press event at the San Diego Comic Con, the film studio that produced the most successful feature film of all time, «Avengers: Endgame», presented its film lineup until 2022.
Black Widow: 1 May 2020
Scarlett Johansson is the Black Widow in the long-awaited film, in which the former Russian agent and now – possibly dead – Avenger gains centre stage. Interesting: actress Florence Pugh plays a woman named Yelena Belova, who appears in the comic books as the second Black Widow.
Part of the film, which hits cinemas on 1 May 2020, is sure to be set in Budapest – a place all too familiar to Marvel film fans.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: autumn 2020
Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan resume their roles as The Falcon and Winter Soldier. On Marvel's new streaming platform Disney Plus, the two will be fighting Zemo, the villain from «Captain America: Civil War». This time, Zemo will be wearing his iconic purple mask from the comics.
The first episode, directed by Kari Skoglan, of the six-episode miniseries, will be available in autumn 2020.
The Eternals: 6 November 2020
The Eternals are an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created humans. They have superpowers and live longer than normal people. They were created by Celestials millions of years ago during genetic experiments on humanity.
This relatively mysterious team of superheroes, who are only featured in just 364 comic editions worldwide
, is played by an impressive cast: Angelina Jolie plays Thena, Salma Hayek is Ajak, Richard Madden plays Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani is Kingo, Brian Tyree plays Phastos, Don Lee is Gilgamesh and Lia McHugh plays Sprite.
Director Chloé Zhao will wrap up the film for a release date of 6 November 2020.
Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: 12 February 2020
Shang-Chi is one of the best martial artists of the Marvel universe. He’s also a spy, a novelist, a philosopher and an Avenger. He uses his martial arts where the weak suffer and the evil rule. Since its first appearance in December 1973, the character has been reinterpreted several times and is now celebrating its debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Simu Liu was cast for the leading role of Shang-Chi. The new movie will pit Shang-Chi against the Mandarin, played by Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, and will also feature Nora Lum, better known as Awkwafina, in a yet unknown role.
Rumour has it that Stephen Norrington is the director. Cinema release date is 12 February 2021.
WandaVision: spring 2021
Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany return as Wanda Maximoff and Vision. The series will also feature Tenoyah Parris in a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau from «Captain Marvel».
In the comic books, Wanda and The Vision are married at times and even have children once – Yet, Wanda's reality-warping powers change things all the time, see «House of M».
The series will be released on Disney Plus in spring 2021.
Loki: spring 2021
Tom Hiddleston. Disney Plus. Loki as we know him from the first Avengers movie. That’s all we know about the series. That and the release date of spring 2021.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: 7 May 2021
Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Strange. At his side: Wanda Maximoff from WandaVision. The film is intended to be a direct continuation of the series.
Director Scott Derrickson is aiming for a release on 7 May 2021.
Marvel What if?: summer 2021
What if Tony Stark was the most powerful wizard in the Marvel universe? What if Magneto had the power to control all mutants? What if J. Jonah Jameson adopted Spider-Man?
These questions from the comic books could be answered in the animated Disney Plus series «Marvel What if...» starting in summer 2021.
Hawkeye: autumn 2021
Who's Clint Barton if he's not saving the world with the Avengers? In the movies, he’s a husband and dad; in the comics, he’s a lovable loser and caretaker of a building that’s regularly attacked by gangsters.
Jeremy Renner will resume his role on Disney Plus in autumn 2021. Also: Kate Bishop, also known as Hawkeye in comic books. The cast for this role hasn’t been revealed.
Thor: Love and Thunder: 5 November 2021
Natalie Portman will not only return to the Marvel universe as Jane Foster, she’ll also swing the hammer. She'll be the next Thor.
In the comic books, Jane Foster just gave up her title as Thor in the aftermath of the crossover «War of the Realms», but, as Thor, mixed up the world of men for years, as author Jason Aaron wrote.
Director Taika Waititi is bringing Thor back to the big screen on 5 November 2021.
Blade: release date unknown
As a big surprise at the San Diego Comic Con, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, announced that Mahershala Ali will take on the role of vampire hunter Blade.
