Mix Fold 2: Xiaomi makes its folding smartphone thinner and lighter
The second folding smartphone from Xiaomi is also the second from the manufacturer with a Leica camera. However, the Mix Fold 2 is only intended for China for the time being.
Compared to its first folding smartphone, Xiaomi has made the Mix Fold 2 thinner and lighter. Although it is still 11.2 millimetres thick when folded, it is only 5.4 millimetres thin when opened. A USB-C port just fits in there. Among other things, this is made possible by a new "micro water drop" hinge.
Up-to-date top processor and Leica camera
Compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is even 55 grams lighter at 262 grams. However, this is accompanied by a reduction of the battery by 520 mAh to 4500 mAh. It is supposed to be charged to 100 per cent in 40 minutes via the 67-watt power supply unit.
The outer AMOLED display of the Mix Fold 2 is 6.56 inches and has a resolution of 2520 × 1080 pixels. The inner OLED display is 8.02 inches and almost square at 2016 × 1914 pixels. Both touchscreens offer a maximum refresh rate of 120 hertz. They are said to come with a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and support HDR10+.
Xiaomi installs the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Mix Fold 2 and provides it with twelve gigabytes of RAM. There is a choice of 256 and 512 gigabytes of internal storage, as well as a terabyte.
The camera system is a great feature.
The camera system on the back consists of a main camera with 50 megapixels (Sony IMX766), an ultra-wide-angle camera with 13 megapixels and a telephoto camera. It has a dual zoom and eight megapixel resolution. As with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Leica has a hand in the camera. The lens above the main camera is from Leica, as are two shooting modes with specially selected colour settings. The front camera delivers selfies with 20 megapixels.
For software, Xiaomi is relying on Android 12L, the version of the operating system for large displays. On top of Google's software, however, comes its own user interface, MIUI Fold 13.
Xiaomi is only selling the Mix Fold 2 in China for the time being. There, its price starts at 8999 yuan, which is the equivalent of about 1300 euros or francs. The manufacturer did not provide any information on possible global sales.
