Only 6000 dollars: the iPhone 12 Pro Max Elon Musk Special Edition
The Russian design studio Caviar takes apart and refines iPhones. Their latest achievement: an iPhone 12 with parts of a SpaceX spaceship. By the way, there are matching shoes to go with it.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max isn't even out yet. Nevertheless, the Russian luxury brand Caviar has already announced a special edition for the Apple phone. The «Musk Be on Mars» edition gives the iPhone a radical redesign. And the 512 GB Pro Max version can be yours for the low low price of 6,150 US dollars. Limited to only 19 phones.
Begone camera bump, here comes the dragon
In terms of basic design, the most striking aspect is probably the camera bump, or a lack of it. Since Caviar probably completely replaced the backplate of the phone and most likely needs a little more space for luxury materials, gimmicks and reliefs, the two-storey camera bump had to make way for profiled titanium.
For the titanium backplate, designers were inspired by Soviet iconography from the Space Race. An original component of SpaceX' «Dragon» rocket is built-in under a silver relief of the spaceship.
If you inspect the phone from top to bottom, the «Dragon» part is also the point at which the design shifts from eccentric to aggressively striking. It spells out «Musk be on Mars» in pronounced lettering, a pun on SpaceX founder Elon Musk and the sentence «Must be on Mars». It's right above Musk's signature and his name, in case you forget him for a moment. Just like everything else, however, the letters aren't printed but milled into the titanium.
Caviar doesn't know any details about the performance of the iPhone 12. The design studio specializes in visual refinement of smartphones and other luxury objects. The target group seems clear: loaded Chinese, Russian and Arab Apple enthusiasts. They have their own definition for the word «luxury».
Matching shoes to go with the phone
Caviar isn't done with iPhones. The «Musk be on Mars» collection also contains matching shoes. A standard pair of Nike Air Force 1s costs just under 100 francs. But in the exclusive Caviar design, this quickly becomes 1380 dollars, or around 1260 francs.
The Mars sneakers are hand-painted and have a piece of the «Dragon» hidden in a rocket design element at the front of the shoe laces.
The sneakers are also exclusive, but not quite as exclusive as the Mars iPhone. Since Elon Musk is 49 years old, Caviar made 49 pairs of shoes. The sneakers are already available.
