Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C has a colour 10.3-inch e-ink display, rear camera and Android

Onyx has unveiled a new e-reader that is suitable for much more than reading books thanks to its Android, rear camera and 8-core processor. The best thing about the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C is probably its 10.3-inch colour e-ink display.
The new Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C is a tablet with an e-ink display. The major advantages of such displays are low energy consumption and good readability that is easy on the eyes. The disadvantages include the comparatively slow image build-up and limitations in colour display. In the new Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C, a Qualcomm chip with a revised graphics unit should ensure that the image is displayed more quickly. However, the manufacturer is particularly keen to point out that the intensity of the colour display has been increased by 30 per cent.

The tablet's "Kaleido 3" e-ink display measures 10.3 inches and has a resolution of 2480 × 1860 pixels (300 ppi) in monochrome mode with 16 shades of grey. In colour mode, it offers 1240 × 930 pixels (150 ppi) and displays 4096 colours. If you want to read or work in the dark, you can illuminate the display with a supposedly flicker-free and eye-friendly LED front light. The colour temperature can be adjusted with the "Moon Light 2" feature. If necessary, you can use a cooler LED light during the day and switch to a warmer one at night.

Operation is possible via touch or with a pen (Pen2 Pro). Making handwritten notes or sketches is therefore no problem. If you want to use the ten-finger system, Onyx offers an optional magnetic keyboard cover. A cover without keyboard and pen are already included.
Like the monochrome-only Boox Tab Ultra, the new one with C in the name has a 16-megapixel rear camera. Thanks to OCR text recognition, you can not only photograph documents, but also convert them into editable text and save them.

A Qualcomm processor with eight cores, clocked at two gigahertz, should provide sufficient power. Four gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigabytes of internal memory and a microSD slot are also included. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 5 and a USB-C port. If you like sound or like voice memos, speakers and a microphone are also included. Last but not least, there is a G-sensor for automatic text alignment when turning the device and a fingerprint sensor.
Since the tablet runs Android 11 as the operating system, you can use apps from the Google Play Store in addition to pre-installed apps such as an audio player. The Onyx Book Tab Ultra C measures 225 × 184.5 × 6.7 millimetres and weighs 480 grams. Its battery has a capacity of 6300 mAh. It is set to go on sale from 10 May - the manufacturer lists it in its own shop including Pen2 Pro and magnetic cover (without keyboard) for USD 599.99.
Whether we will be able to offer the e-reader in our shop soon, and at what price, is currently being clarified.
