PS5 Cloud Streaming: Sony expands its gaming offering
Until now, Cloud Gaming from Sony has only been available for PS3 and PS4 games. From 23 October, the company will extend the function to PS5 games.
The advantage of playing games directly from the cloud is that they don't have to be installed first. So far, however, Sony has only offered titles from its predecessor consoles on sale in the cloud. Sony has now increased the hardware in its data centres. From 23 October, European gamers with Playstation 5 will be able to enjoy many PS5 titles. In Japan, the launch will take place on 17 October - in North America on 30 October.
What does it cost and what does it work with?
For game streaming, you will need a Playstation 5 at the start of the new offer. Streaming to another end device, as is possible with Microsoft, or the soon to be released handheld Playstation Portal is not included. You must also be a member of Playstation Plus Premium. The game subscription costs around 170 francs/150 euros a year.
Which games are included
Sony is aiming to offer hundreds of PS5 games, starting with some that come from the Plus catalogue. In the blog, the company cites examples such as "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales", "Horizon Forbidden West", "Ghost of Tsushima", "Mortal Kombat 11" and "Saints Row IV".
There are also titles purchased or unlocked by the customer, such as "Resident Evil 4", "Dead Island 2", "Genshin Impact", "Fall Guys" and "Fortnite". There are also test versions of games such as "Hogwarts Legacy", "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" and "The Calisto Protocol".
What quality will be streamed?
The titles will be streamed in SDR or HDR with resolutions of 4K, 1440p, 1080p and 720p. This should include 60 FPS. The sound is transmitted with up to 7.1 channels and Tempest 3D Audiotech is also supported. Sony specifies the required internet speed as at least 5 megabits per second (Mbps) for 720p. At least 15 Mbps is required for 1080p and 38 Mbps for 4K resolution.
