Repair it yourself: Microsoft sells Surface spare parts
Microsoft is now selling replacement parts for its Surface devices. This makes it possible to breathe new life into a defective device even after the warranty has expired. But only in three countries for the time being.
Until now, anyone who wanted to repair a defect on their Surface Pro, laptop or Studio themselves after the warranty period was more or less at a loss. This is now changing - Microsoft is starting to sell spare parts in its store. The range varies depending on the Surface device and is limited to newer models. For example, there is only one replacement stand for the Surface Pro 7 from 2019 - but 13 spare parts for the Pro 9, including a display, replacement cameras, SSD or new power and volume buttons.
Microsoft is supplying the following devices with spare parts at the launch of its new service:
- Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 5G
- Surface Laptop 3, Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Laptop 5
- Surface Laptop Go 2
- Surface Laptop Studio
- Surface Studio 2+
Microsoft has listed an overview of all spare part types per device in its blog here. For the time being, the products are only available in the Microsoft Store in the USA, Canada and France.
Depending on the type, the spare parts are not cheap. For example, the replacement display for the Surface Studio 2+ costs a whopping 1750 US dollars. A new stand for the Surface Pro 9, on the other hand, is available for 57 US dollars - a 1 TB SSD for 232 US dollars. So far, the spare parts are only available in the Microsoft Store. However, they will soon be available from Surface dealers in all countries. Official repair tools are also available - although these are not distributed by Microsoft, but by iFixit.
