Samsung Galaxy S11: will the new Galaxy have a rollable display?

A patent allows us a sneak peek into Samsung’s plans. Will the Samsung Galaxy S11 have an expandable screen? Renderings show what the phone might look like.

The Samsung Galaxy S11 is quite likely to stir up the world of smartphones. The design discovered by the Tech Blog LetsGoDigital in the database of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) suggests that foldable phones may not be the future. As the patent is written in Hangul, LetsGoDigital 3D artists created renderings according to the plans in the patent. The result? A phone with a pull-out screen.

Expandable and rollable

The patent was filed with KIPO in December 2018, approved in May 2019 and published on 24 June 2019. The 14 sketches in the patent show a smartphone that remains true to the design of the rectangle with rounded corners. But the display is expandable. With this, Samsung joins the list of manufacturers of rollable screens. In January 2019, LG was the first company to present a television with a roll-up screen.

The sketches reveal that the screen can be pulled out and it is supported by moving rails.

Based on the position of the camera, which is located in a hole in the display – called Infinity-O by Samsung – it seems as if the rollable display of the S11 is stored on the right side of the display.

The question is: how stable is a rollable display that’s stretched over a hollow space? The extendable part of this Galaxy S11 sketch seems to be supported by nothing but possibly a back wall that’s also extendable. Except, of course, if Samsung plans to use a design where the screen is supported with cross beams, similar to sun blinds.

Design not confirmed

At present, the exact design and specs of the Samsung Galaxy S11 are unknown. The patent is a design, not an actual, complete smartphone. The South Korean company is known to patent a large number of smartphone designs every year, just in case they do decide to make use of one of them.

The Samsung Galaxy S11 is scheduled to be launched in spring 2020. However, despite the patent, this design might not be used for the S11, but for the Samsung Galaxy S12 or even the Samsung Galaxy S13. The patent itself doesn’t mention the name S11.
