Smartphone ranking: Xiaomi overtakes Samsung

According to market research institute Strategy Analytics’ latest figures, Samsung sold fewer smartphones in the second quarter of 2021 than Xiaomi. The Korean press is worried.
Sales figures published by the market research institute Strategy Analytics show that Samsung’s no longer the market leader in Europe in the second quarter of 2021. The competition from China has overtaken the Korean tech giant – at least when it comes to the number of smartphones sold.

While they used to dominate the sales figures and sold twelve million devices in Europe in the second quarter of 2021, that wasn’t enough to beat Xiaomi who sold around 700,000 more smartphones in the same period.

Korean press is worried
The Chinese manufacturer taking over the top position in smartphone sales has also been discussed in the Korean press. The main criticism is that Samsung's Galaxy S series didn’t sell as well as expected by far.

Different story in Switzerland
However, Switzerland is unlikely to have contributed much to Xiaomi's high sales figures in Europe, as other manufacturers are more popular here. Apple in particular dominates the Swiss market. According to a study by Comparis (available only in German), seven of the ten most popular smartphones used by people in Switzerland in 2020 were from Apple. The remaining three were Samsung devices.
