Sonos: New app simplifies your music control

An overhaul is planned for the Sonos speaker app. According to Sonsos, it is the "most comprehensive update of the app to date". The revised application will be available worldwide from 7 May 2024 via a software update for the mobile S2 app and as a web app. It will be supported by all S2 products. However, users of the S1 platform will not receive any further development. This mainly affects old speakers such as the Sonos Play:5.

One of the changes is the removal of the navigation tabs. Many functions such as grouping, system settings or browsing music service content could previously be found in different tabs. This meant that you had to switch back and forth between these tabs, for example to select the room for playback, search for music to play and then control the music playback on the "Now playing" screen.

The new Sonos app now gives you access to search, shows your music services, Sonos favourites and recently played tracks on a customisable home screen. It also gives you complete control over every speaker and group in your system, according to Sonos. You can find more detailed information on the structure of the new home screen here. According to Sonos, the new home screen primarily offers faster access to the entire system control. You no longer have to click through various tabs. The search function is always available at the bottom of the home screen. Your previous settings and favourites will be transferred to the new app.

Linux support for the first time: web app replaces desktop client for the PC

If you control your Sonos devices via your PC, you won't be left out in the cold. There will be a new web app to replace the previous desktop client for Windows and MacOS. This will offer the same system control and be available via any modern web browser. This also means that the Sonos app will be available for Linux for the first time.
