Another member of the Sony A7 family: the A7C has practical dimensions. The new kit lens is also small and light.

Small format, also known as full format in the digital age, is considered a guarantee of professional image quality. Those who still decide to use a camera with a smaller sensor usually do so because the equipment is smaller and lighter. With full-frame cameras as compact as possible, manufacturers want to make full-frame attractive to all those who found it too big and heavy.

Sony's smallest full-frame camera to date is the new Alpha 7C. The C stands for compact.
Four models in the Sony A7 series are now on the market. The other three:

  • The unlettered A7 is a versatile camera. Latest model: Sony A7 III
  • The A7S is especially sensitive to light and is ideal for video recording. Latest model to date: Sony A7S III
  • The A7R boasts high resolution. Latest model to date: Sony A7R IV

Compatible lenses

Having a compact body isn't much use if the lenses are big and heavy. And that's often the case with full-frame cameras. Alongside the A7C, Sony is introducing a small, lightweight lens. With a focal length of 28 to 60mm, it covers all parts of the image, from wide angle to telephoto. The usual standard zooms offer a little more, with 24-70mm at both ends. The lens only weighs around 170 grams, but it's not particularly bright with its f/4-5.6.

Compared to the Sony A7 III, the A7C feels more compact, mainly thanks to the lens. The body itself is less tall, thanks to the integrated viewfinder, which is smaller.

What is the A7C capable of?

Small camera bodies often don't have a built-in image stabiliser. The A7C is a pleasant exception. Its five-axis stabiliser has been revamped and therefore takes up less space.

The A7C only has one SD card slot. Probably a concession that had to be made to achieve compact dimensions.

The 24-megapixel sensor on the back of the camera delivers images up to ISO 51,200. With 10 frames per second in burst mode and the A7R IV's autofocus, the camera should also be suitable for sports and action photography. Its magnesium body is dustproof and splashproof.

With the A7C, video recording should be a breeze. The camera features a side-folding, fully swivelling screen and a clearly visible record button on the top of the body. In addition, the A7C is compatible with the ECM-B1M digital microphone. The camera is also equipped with headphone and microphone connections.

The Sony A7C is expected to be available from October 2020. As well as the usual black, this model is also available in black-silver.
