Netflix has announced a fourth season of 'Stranger Things' with a short trailer. What's more, the streaming service has tied the series' creators to a multi-year contract to produce films and series: a move designed to keep the streaming competition at bay.
The arrival of the trailer doesn't really come as a surprise. Nevertheless, the official announcement, which confirms a fourth season of "Stranger Things" on Netflix, delights fans the world over.
In the trailer, you can see the bright red "Stranger Things" logo with the four in the background. A climbing plant gradually covers the logo - the evil of "Upside Down", the creepy dimension of a mirror. Then comes the series' new motto:
"We're not in Hawkins anymore."
A new location: London?
The contents of the trailer reveal nothing. Or too little. Apparently, a change of location seems to be happening: "Stranger Things" has until now mostly taken place in the fictional small town of Hawkins - with the exception of the episode "Lost Sister".exception of the episode 'Lost Sister' from season 2, which fans consider to be the least good. Still, the experiment seems to be repeated in season 4.
It's not yet clear where the troupe around Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and friends are headed. From the sound of the bells we hear in the trailer, London seems like a good candidate. Another possible location, depending on the season three finale, could be Russia.
But maybe the climbing plant in the trailer is an allusion to the topsy-turvy world and the evil that spreads into the real world. Either way: the series is broadening its horizons.
New mega deal for series creators
But the announcement of the fourth season is not the end of the story. In a press release, Netfilx announces simultaneously a multi-year film and series deal for the Duffer brothers; the creators of the series. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos comments:
The Duffer brothers have won over audiences around the world with « Stranger Things». That's why we're excited to strengthen our relationship with them so they can infuse their creativity into other film and series projects. We look forward to seeing what the Duffer brothers have in store for us when they leave the world of « Stranger Things».
Sarandos talks about the end of the series. Will the fourth season be the last? Maybe. The Duffer brothers have talked about at least four, but no more than six seasons.
Apropos: they, too, speak out during these mutual praises.
We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Netflix. Ted Sarandos, Cindy Holland, Brian Wright and Matt Thunell have given us a great opportunity - and changed our lives forever. From the very beginning, the entire Netflix team has been nothing short of sensational, offering us the kind of support, guidance and creative freedom we've always dreamed of.

In fact, the Duffer brothers could decide for themselves when the series will end. But the terms of the multi-year mega-deal have not been disclosed. According to sources, in light of the huge global success, there is a similar deal in place between Netflix and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The latter have signed a five-year deal with an obligation to deliver nine films or series for Netflix.
Netflix is thus continuing its strategy of retaining well-known directors and producers. Patty Jenkins, director of "Wonder Woman", and Janet Mock, director of "Pose", have also made long-term commitments to Netflix. In addition, legendary director Martin Scorsese will deliver an Oscar contender for Netflix with "The Irishman". First in cinemas and a few weeks later on the streaming platform.
Given the competition from Disney, Apple and HBO, it's likely that Netflix has made a good decision. Filming on the fourth season of 'Stranger Things' is already set to begin this month. This would allow the series to launch in late 2020 or early 2021.

I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
