For a while there, it looked like Windows would stay at version number 10 forever. Alas, this isn’t to be. A variety of hints indicate that the successor will be called Windows 11. We’ll know much more soon.

Even without a crystal ball, it’s obvious that Windows 11 will be coming soon: Microsoft will already be hosting a Windows event in June, with CEO Satya Nadella mentioning the «next Windows generation». On top of that, we also now know when the support for Windows 10 will end.

After 10 years, it’s over for Windows 10

A newly discovered entry on the Lifecyle support page for Microsoft’s Windows 10 has revealed some juicy titbits. On October 14, 2025, support for Windows 10 Home and Pro will end. This version of the operating system will thus have a lifespan of just over ten years.

At least now it’s confirmed: Windows 10 won’t exist forever. We don’t know much about its successor yet, but we can be sure that there will be one.

11 as far as the eye can see

There is a high probability that Microsoft will unveil its successor to Windows 10 on June 24, 2021, and that it will be called Windows 11.

Hint number 1: in most numerical sequences, 10 is followed by 11.

Even though Microsoft has shown that its order of the digits isn’t sacred by skipping Windows 9.

Hint number 2: the Microsoft Event on June 24, 2021 will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. Its corporate headquarters is in a different time zone, yet the East Coast time is prominently displayed. That’s around 5 p.m. here.

Hint number 3: released on June 10, this video on the startup sounds of Windows 95, Windows XP and Windows 7 slowed down by 4000 per cent and is exactly 11 minutes long.

At the Build 2021 developer’s conference, CEO Satya Nadella highly praised the next Windows generation before giving first insights. These include major visual changes to the user interface under the codename «Sun Valley» and a new store. Nadella stresses that developers and creators are welcome on the «most innovative, new, open platform to build and distribute and monetise applications».

On June 24, we will learn more about the next generation of Windows:

  • Will it really be called Windows 11?
  • What novelties does it bring?
  • How will it look?
  • What are its requirements?
  • When will it release?
  • How much will it cost?

But I doubt that all questions will be answered at the event.

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
