Background information
From Darkwing Duck to Adventures of the Gummi Bears: my favourite 90s kids’ TV shows (part 1)
by Kim Muntinga
Horror kings Gary Dauberman and James Wan are working on a live-action adaptation of the 90s animated series "Gargoyles" for Disney+.
In my opinion, one of the best animated series of the 90s is set to return. The two filmmakers Gary Dauberman ("It", "The Nun") and James Wan ("Saw", "Insidious", "Conjuring") are adapting the series as live action for Disney+, according to the usually well-informed Hollywood Reporter reports. Both are primarily known from the horror genre and have already shot the horror film series "Annabelle" together. Dauberman will not only be one of the executive producers, but will also write and showrun the series. According to the report, the project is currently in an early development phase at Disney Branded Television. Therefore, no information about the plot or actors is yet known.
"Gargoyles" was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and aired in three seasons from 1994 to 1997. As a child, "Gargoyles" captured my heart. The figures, the characters, the gritty look and the action. It made a big impression on me. And the series still works very well for me today. I recently watched a few episodes again for my nostalgia article about my favourite children's series from the 90s:
This live-action adaptation is not the first attempt to revitalise the series. Jordan Peele ("Get Out", "Us") had already submitted a pitch to Disney a few years ago. Series creator Greg Weisman revealed this in an interview with Comingsoon.net. However, the idea was not pursued any further. As recently as July of this year, there were also rumours that Kenneth Branagh ("Thor", "Belfast") had been hired by Disney as director. Weisman immediately denied this. He has not yet commented on the current report.
In general, the "Gargoyles" have gained attention again. Since the end of last year, a new comic has been published that continues the story of the series. In addition, the game "Gargoyles Remastered" will be released on 19 October for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Windows PCs. This is a new edition of a 16-bit platformer that was released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1995. The trailer for the game shows footage of the original game, followed by the remaster. It also gives a preview of the various new functions: the ability to rewind and a new visual style. The player can instantly switch between the original graphics and the remastered style. Unfortunately, I never played the game as a child, but I could imagine having a look at it.
Are you looking forward to the return of the "Gargoyles"? What do you expect from a live-action series? Which actors could you imagine in the respective roles? And do you already know the new comics or did you play the old "Gargoyles" game back in the day? Let me know in the comments.
