The Google Pixel is finally here...but there's a small catch

The Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL are now available to order from us. Find out now why it took so long and why there is a catch, or rather two.

It's already been over a month since we introduced you to Google's first own smartphones and got you excited about them. Unfortunately, it was also revealed that Google is limiting the first batch to the following five countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK and the USA. So while our northern neighbours have been enjoying their Pixels for a fortnight now, the Swiss have been left out in the cold. Your numerous enquiries as to whether and when digitec would finally be able to deliver the devices did not go unheard.

Our product manager has been endeavouring to find the devices somewhere in the world right from the start. Hong Kong, USA, Great Britain, nothing was left untried. Demand was and still is very high worldwide, which drives up the already hefty price even further. The fact that Google is pushing subsidised sales via mobile phone subscriptions makes it even more difficult for us to buy. German Telekom, for example, has little interest in selling us hundreds or even thousands of devices without a plan.

In addition to the providers and Google itself, there is usually only one retailer, such as Carphone in the UK, offering the devices for sale. Bad conditions for digitec to get the goods quickly and cheaply.

Supply will increase and prices will fall

After many dead ends, our product manager finally managed to import the Pixel phones. However, the quantity is still very low and availability will only slowly stabilise over the next few weeks. The situation is similar with the price. The limited product and the high demand are reflected 1:1 in the price. We also have to offer the guarantee ourselves and include a Swiss power plug so that you don't have to buy an extra adapter. So we're not making a fortune from the Pixel phones. Our primary concern is to offer you, the digitec customers, a service. You want the devices, we have them.

So if you want the Pixel or Pixel XL at any price, you have the opportunity to do so now. However, those who can still wait can get away with it at a lower price.

The other newly introduced products are also not (yet) officially available from us.

The situation is similar with Google's VR glasses Daydream and the Chromecast Ultra. Our product managers are also endeavouring to get hold of the devices as quickly as possible. We should receive limited quantities of the Daydream VR in a few weeks. Nothing is yet known about the Chromecast Ultra.

We thank you for your patience and: "It would have been so long."

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
