The iPad mini rumour mill: redesign with flat edges planned for autumn

The smallest iPad is set to get its biggest redesign, according to leakers. But besides flat edges and the M1 chip, another question arises: is that a new Apple Pencil?

The rumour mill is churning. The iPad mini, Apple’s often-overlooked small iPad, is to receive a redesign, according to Apple analyst and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. It’s «the biggest redesign in [its] nine-year history,» he writes.

The design is supposed to be very similar to that of the current iPads and iPhones. That’s to say, the tablet will have flat edges. The new 8.4-inch screen – an upgrade from the current 7.9 inches – is expected to house the new Apple Silicon M1 chip.

But the design is supposed to be similar to the iPad Air only. So, it’s possible the home button will remain. Still, leaker Jon Prosser, who has published visualisations of the supposed iPad mini, doubts this.

In addition, Prosser believes the iPad mini will also bid the Lightning connector farewell and switch to USB-C instead. According to him, the iPad mini will be available in three colours: black, silver and gold.

But there’s something the tech journalist is still unsure of: while it seems certain that the new iPad mini will support the Apple Pencil, there are rumours of a new, smaller Pencil being released. Would it be a Pencil specifically for the iPad mini? And will it be called Apple Pencil Mini? Or is that the Apple Pencil 3, successor to the second Pencil?
