The Playstation 5 arrives at the end of 2020
Sony drops the Playstation bombshell unexpectedly early and officially announces the next Playstation for the end of 2020. The name and new details about the hardware are now also known.
The fifth Playstation will be called Playstation 5. Sony will not be experimenting with the name, as CEO Jim Ryan told Wired. The previously announced launch date has also been confirmed. The new console will be released at the end of 2020. This is the same time frame as the PS4, which was launched in this country on 29 November 2013.
In the interview with Wired, chief developer Mark Cerny also answered questions. He revealed a few new details about the hardware. Firstly, he made it clear that ray tracing would not be implemented via a software trick, but would be hardware-accelerated via the GPU, as with Nvidia's RTX cards.
Another exciting point concerns memory management. Sony is now installing an SSD and you will have the option of only installing certain parts of a game. If you are only interested in the multiplayer part, you can only install this. Or you can delete the campaign separately after playing through. Cerny also explained that physical games are packed onto 100 GB Blu-ray discs, which are read by the built-in UHD-capable Blu-ray player.
Controller with better feedback
The next Dualshock controller, which does not yet have an official name, will also be revised. In an interview with Wired, there is talk of adaptive shoulder buttons and better vibration. The shoulder buttons should naturally adapt to different weapon types such as bows, shotguns or machine guns. This is reminiscent of the Xbox One controller, which already has separately vibrating triggers. This allows you to better feel the rumbling of the engine during car races, for example. The new haptic feedback of the PS5 controller, meanwhile, lets you perceive a march through mud or sand differently. A loudspeaker will also be installed again.
The user interface will also undergo a refresh. You will be able to access more information about game content directly from the main menu. According to Cerny, it should be possible to jump directly into certain multiplayer games or single-player campaigns. In the latter, you can also see directly which rewards you will receive without having to start the game first. <p
Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
