UFS 4.0: Samsung's new smartphone storage becomes faster and more power-efficient
Twice as fast and only half as much power consumption: Samsung has announced its first smartphone memory based on the UFS 4.0 standard.
The new UFS 4.0 standard has not even been officially introduced yet, but that does not prevent Samsung from announcing the first products. They have been approved by the responsible JEDEC committee. Production is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2022.
Samsung has not yet reached its maximum speed
In theory, the memory connection with UFS 4.0 doubles from 2.9 gigabytes per second (GByte/s) to 5.8 (GByte/s). or 5800 megabytes per second (MB/s). Samsung's new storage doesn't reach that yet. On Twitter, Samsung speaks of a read speed of 4800 MB/s and a write speed of 2800 MB/s.
Samsung expects advantages especially when processing large amounts of data that come to the devices via 5G. Samsung mentions AR, VR and "automotive applications" by name. This should also make it clear that the new storage is not only intended for smartphones.
With a maximum dimension of 11×13×1 millimeters and capacities of up to one terabyte, it is definitely suitable for smartphones. It could provide longer battery runtimes there. Samsung states a power consumption, respectively a read speed of 6 MB/s per mA. Compared to UFS 3.1, this is an improvement of 46 percent.
Due to the production of UFS 4.0 memory starting in the third quarter, the variants of the Galaxy S23 expected for early 2023 could be the first smartphones to benefit from it.
