WhatsApp has made it after all: dark mode is here

After what felt like an eternity, WhatsApp for Android has finally made it: dark mode is here. But only for beta users for the time being.
Dark mode is now available in the latest beta version of WhatsApp. After almost nobody believed in it anymore, it is now available in beta version 2.20.13 on Android. The mode will also be available for all other users - but it is not yet known when this will be.
The app may look dark, but it's not completely black. More like dark grey. But still better than the normal green and white design.

WhatsApp announced dark mode around two years ago. Nobody knows why it took so incredibly long to implement a simple dark mode. The mode is standard in many other apps.
Beta users can activate dark mode in the settings under "Chats". There is not only the option light or dark, but also the system settings option. In this setting, the mode should only be activated when the phone is in Android dark mode or the battery saving options are on.

Messages sent by you are new in a dark green box, messages received in a dark grey one.
Are you not a beta tester and still want dark mode? Then you'll have to wait a little longer. WhatsApp is currently no longer accepting new beta registrations.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
