Why it’s a good thing that Noctua has ditched white fans

Noctua has taken white fans off its roadmap. The Austrian cooling component specialist has chosen to focus on developing other products instead. It’s a good move from a marketing point of view – and will benefit customers too.

Responding to an X user’s question on 3 March, Noctua announced it was putting its development of white fans on hold:

White fans had already disappeared from Noctua’s product roadmap by mid-2023. Although, at that point, the company still hadn’t scrapped them completely. Its most recent statement, however, sounds pretty final. Even if it isn’t an out-and-out U-turn.

Though bad news for people who want Noctua fans for their white PC build, the announcement’s good news for everyone else. It means the cooling component specialist can shift its focus back to what really matters: making its outstanding products even better, and developing new ones. This can only be a good thing for us customers. After all, giving an existing product a new coat of paint is more laborious than you might think – especially if it’s white.

This article explains why the colour white hoovers up so many resources in development. Basically, colour matching white plastic is very difficult. Not only that, but its tone changes over time. Especially when the product’s being used in an environment with changing temperatures – just the kind of problem Noctua’s cooling components would be confronted with.

Noctua fans are already available in black as well as its classic brown colour scheme. So, the manufacturer offers more than one colour option. More than enough. There’s no need to widen the selection, as doing so would weaken the Noctua brand. The brown’s iconic and inextricably linked in my mind with the brand. When I see the fans on a PC, I recognise them instantly.

Personally, I’m more concerned with function than appearance anyway. When I build a PC, I either make the colour of the fans a focal point or do without a transparent side panel altogether. If the fans are hidden, the colour doesn’t matter. That being said, I like Noctua’s colour scheme.

The white fans have a long history of development behind them. They were revealed back in 2019 at Computex, the same time as the NH-P1 passive cooler. The cooler, which has been on the market for more than two years now, impressed me when I tried it out. Fortunately, Noctua’s fans don’t need to try and win me over. White or not, they’re outstanding.
