Why you shouldn't wash with warm water after shaving your genitals
It pinches, itches, burns: razor bumps in the genital area are no fun. But you could avoid them - by following these 5 tips.
Shaving quickly before your next date or swimming pool visit - this usually ends in a bikini line plagued by pimples and redness. It's not just the shaving itself that you need to pay attention to: for example, don't shave against the grain and always use a clean and sharp blade. You also need to take care of your skin afterwards. I'll tell you how to do this here
1. wash with cold water
Admittedly, this takes some effort, especially when it comes to the intimate area. But cold water has a decisive effect on the skin: it closes your pores. This means less bacteria can penetrate after shaving, causing inflammation and redness. If, on the other hand, you wash with warm water, your pores open wide and give these pathogens free access.
2. use a fresh towel
Towels are a breeding ground for all kinds of germs and bacteria. To avoid further irritating your skin after shaving, you should use a clean towel instead of an old one. When drying off: dab, don't rub. This will protect your skin. The towels from Bio:Vio, for example, are made from 100 per cent organic cotton.
3. treat sensitive areas
You can do this with baby powder or zinc ointment. Baby powder prevents skin irritations that can quickly occur in the groin area. Zinc has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps your skin to heal. However, if you already have pimples and want to dry them out, you can also use tea tree oil.
My personal favourite is aloe vera: I harvest a leaf from my plant every now and then and cut it open. The gel it contains has a soothing effect on the skin and is great for moisturising. If you would like to buy your own aloe vera plant for this purpose, you can find it here.
But be careful, the following applies to all variants: Only apply to the outer genital area and the groin area. These products have no place on the labia minora and must not get into the vagina. Otherwise they will irritate your mucous membranes.
4. avoid wearing tight underwear
You should avoid tight thongs or tight-fitting panties made of synthetic materials immediately after shaving. Instead, opt for breathable underwear made from breathable cotton. This prevents skin irritation and allows the freshly shaved intimate area to breathe - so it heals faster. The brands Schiesser and La Redoute Collections, for example, offer cotton underwear in multi-packs. Even better, as my colleague Anika advises: shave in the evening before you go to bed and go to bed in loose pyjama bottoms.
5. no strenuous activities afterwards
Doing sport or going to the sauna straight afterwards is a bad idea. This is because sweat transports a lot of bacteria, which can quickly lead to inflammation. So if possible, sit back and relax on the couch first and avoid sweat-inducing activities
