Microsoft announced Windows 11 in June and has released several test versions since. Today, the company announced that the final version will be released as a free update for Windows 10 on 5 October 2021.

Fans of plays on numbers may find themselves disappointed – Windows 11 will not, in fact, be released on 11.11. at 11:11 a.m. But everyone else is happy that the new Windows is coming over a month early.

Step-by-step rollout

Microsoft announced the launch date for Windows 11 in a blog post. A gradual rollout is planned, starting 5 October. New computers should receive the update first. Microsoft then plans to gradually display notices about the available update on computers that meet the requirements for Windows 11. Alternatively, you can check for updates manually under Settings -> Update & Security -> Check for updates.

You can use Windows PC Health Check to check whether your computer meets the requirements for Windows 11. Microsoft has stated that it will be possible to install Windows 11 even if not all requirements are met – at your own risk and with no guarantee that everything will run smoothly.

New design, new features

Windows 11 brings a new design and new features to your computer. These include a centred taskbar, rounded window corners, new colours and a dark mode. Widgets will act as an interface between the new design and features. Snap Groups offers new layout options for fitting multiple windows on one screen. Teams will be integrated into Windows 11, and Android apps will be available for download in the redesigned Microsoft Store. In addition, the new operating system is supposed to start faster, consume less energy and have smaller updates.

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
