With Wi-Fi 7 and Ray Tracing: Mediatek Dimensity 9200 presented
Mediatek has presented its new top chipset for smartphones: The Dimensity 9200 has Wi-Fi 7 on board, supports ray tracing and is supposed to be faster than a predecessor - while consuming less power.
Compared to its predecessor Dimensity 9000 is said to deliver ten per cent more CPU performance - and consume 25 per cent less power. The GPU is said to offer 32 per cent more performance and use 41 per cent less power. For the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) responsible for artificial intelligence, the figures are 35 per cent more and 45 per cent less.
Up to 3.05 gigahertz and ray tracing
The word may not be out everywhere yet, but Mediatek finally got its foot in the door for top smartphones in late 2021 with the Dimensity 9000. The new Dimensity 9200 continues on that path and should be serious competition for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
The Dimensity 9200, which is manufactured using a 4-nanometre process, has eight processing cores. These include the Cortex-X3 arm, which, according to the manufacturer, is the first computing core in a smartphone with a clock speed of up to 3.05 gigahertz. In addition, there are three Cortex-A715 with up to 2.85 gigahertz and four Cortex-A510 without gigahertz specification. The chipset supports LPDDR5X RAM at up to 8533 Mbps and UFS-4.0 memory.
The Immortalis G715 graphics chip is also the first in a smartphone to support hardware-based ray tracing. HyperEngine 6.0 is supposed to make games generally faster and smoother and reduce motion blur, for example. Energy consumption is said to be reduced by 18 per cent at high frame rates. For audio transmissions via Bluetooth, the latency is reduced to 53 milliseconds.
Smartphones with the Dimensity 9200 can use displays with full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 240 hertz. With a WHQD resolution, the refresh rate is reduced to a maximum of 144 hertz and with a 5K resolution, only 60 hertz is possible.
RGBW sensors and Wi-Fi 7
The Imagiq 890 image processor delivers better images in general, according to Mediatek. However, it will also depend on the sensors and lenses installed. With native support for RGBW sensors, however, it is said to use up to 34 per cent less energy and absorb up to 30 per cent more light.
The Dimensity 9200 is the first smartphone chip to support Wi-Fi 7. Theoretically, transmission rates of up to 6.5 Gbps are possible with it. However, this is currently still an investment in the future, as Wi-Fi 7 is still in its infancy and there are hardly any compatible devices.
The first smartphones with the Dimensity 9200 are expected to appear at the end of 2022. However, Mediatek has not yet revealed which manufacturers will be involved. Asus, for example, had used the Dimensity 9000 in the ROG Phone 6Dlink with title.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
