Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: "Killed by Software" is actually a thing
by Dominik Bärlocher
Forget rounded display edges or waterfall designs: Xiaomi has unveiled the new display king among smartphones with the Mi Mix Alpha.
The Mi Mix Alpha is said to have a screen-to-body ratio of 180.6 per cent, reports Xiaomi in the related blog post. The display should not only cover the entire front, but also be significantly larger. What is mathematically impossible works in practice with a trick.
Xiaomi has always tried to maximise the size of the display on its Mi Mix series smartphones. With the Mi Mix Alpha, the display is not satisfied with the front and does not end at the side. It goes on and on and also covers the back almost completely. Only a narrow strip for the cameras and the flash are not a touchscreen.
Xiaomi speaks of a "surround display". Very narrow edges remain at the top and bottom of the aluminium "housing", which is actually just the top and bottom of the display tube. The display also functions as a loudspeaker and the sides react to pressure. A motor should ensure that it feels as if you are pressing real buttons.
The main camera on the back has a resolution of 108 megapixels. There is also a wide-angle camera with 20 megapixels and a telephoto lens with 12 megapixels.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is equipped with the Snapdragon 855+ including 5G module, twelve gigabytes of RAM and 512 gigabytes of internal memory. The battery has a capacity of 4050 mAh and can be charged quickly with a 40-watt power adapter.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is not a prototype or design study, but a finished smartphone. The manufacturer plans to sell it in China from the end of December. The price is expected to be 19,999 yuan - the equivalent of just over 2,500 euros, or almost 2,800 francs. It is unclear whether it will also come to Europe on a regular basis, but you would most likely have to dig deeper into your pocket than if you wanted to fold the display with the Galaxy Fold.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
