"Zu Befehl, Herbert" - Germany procures emergency supplies

The world has seen rosier times: The 2020s got off to a lousy start. Covid-19, the flood of the century and the Ukraine war are the main players in this drama. The war has far-reaching consequences - also in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The German government recommends stockpiling 14 days' worth of food. This appeal has been heeded, as Galaxus' sales figures show.

March was an exceptional month. Certain products sold much better than usual on Galaxus. Where did this strong demand come from? I didn't want to jump to conclusions by analyzing our sales data, so I waited for the month of April. Now I find that the month of March is actually out of line.

Emergency stockpile recommended

Many people in German-speaking countries stocked up on emergency supplies in March. The reason is obvious: On February 23, Putin launched a war of aggression against Ukraine. The war is causing great consternation and uncertainty among the population.

As is well known, forewarned is forearmed: Consequently, one or the other person has stocked up on emergency supplies. And not without reason: "People have to understand that disasters can happen not only somewhere in the world, but also here with us every day," NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul told the Kölner Stadtanzeiger.

Equipped for emergencies: camping stoves and night vision devices

Looking at our product range and the corresponding sales figures, it is immediately apparent that outdoor equipment boomed at Galaxus in March. Water filters (+642%), night vision devices (+322%), camping stoves (+295%) and lamps (+183%), and fishing accessories (+135%) posted the biggest year-over-year growth.

A similar picture emerges when ranking by unit sales. The top ten are as follows: Camping stoves, outdoor water filters, camping utensils, headlamps, climbing accessories, camping furniture, camping lamps, sleeping bags, tent accessories and binoculars. And in case of any mishap: The first aid kit was sold 249 percent more often in March than in the previous year. These items probably ended up not only in Swiss or German air-raid shelters, but also as donations of materials to people in need in Ukraine.

High sales of canned goods

Emergency supplies also include food and beverages. Their sales figures were also exceptionally high in March. Never before have so many canned goods and ready meals (+214%) been sold on galaxus.ch as in March 2022. Sugar (+179%), mineral water (+133%) and milk (+118%) are also high on the list. And many are also thinking of their four-legged friends: masters and mistresses bought 80% more dog and cat food than in the previous year.

Solar energy instead of Russian gas

When it comes to consumer goods, Galaxus customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland have also upgraded: The drive for self-sufficiency in energy seems to have increased. Who knows how long Russia will continue to supply oil and gas to the West? Among the most popular items are mobile power supplies, called 'power stations' in English, with growth of 493 percent. Solar panels (+439%), solar panels (+212%), power generators (+185%) and flashlights (+132%) are also bestsellers in March. In an emergency, people also want to be well informed: In March, we sold 58% more radios than last year.

How are you dealing with the current situation? Have you found out where the nearest shelter is? Have you bought emergency supplies or did you already have some? Or is this all going too far for you? Share your experiences with the community if you like.
