"The OM System company recently emerged from the Olympus camera division. This does not change anything for users, cameras and accessories continue to come from a single source and are compatible with the devices still developed by Olympus. Like Panasonic, OM System relies on the "Micro Four Thirds" standard (MFT)...
With the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, photographers can get into high-quality Micro Four Thirds photography at a good price. You get a good sensor, Olympus-typical special features and fast and solid technology. Photographers will have to dig deeper into their pockets for more and more up-to-date refinements than in the E-M10 Mark IV from 2020...
- Simple operation
- many controls
- Compact and lightweight
- Moderate focus tracking with series
- GPS location via app awkward
The OM-D E-M10IV is a great camera for beginners: it is very compact and pleasantly light and scores with high photo quality, a top image stabiliser and more controls than usual in this price range - so camera settings can be adjusted without menu detours. When filming, the sound quality of the built-in microphone is poor and there is no connection for an external microphone.
The Olympus E-M10IV can improve in RAW format and performs similarly to the other current Olympus models with a 20 MP sensor. We already see a positive effect at ISO 100, but the camera still degrades considerably at high ISO levels in RAW format. In terms of image quality, the E-M10 IV cannot challenge the competition.
- The camera is a small and lightweight travel companion that nevertheless offers the versatile application possibilities of a system camera. This also includes extensive video functions.
- Unfortunately, the monitor can only be folded up and down. When using the tripod, the selfie or vlogger position is therefore partially covered by the tripod head. The resolution of the viewfinder could be higher.
The new Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV offers a well-balanced performance and an altogether extensive equipment to beginners in the Micro Four Thirds system who are looking for a very small and light camera. Only minor compromises have to be made to this, such as the resolutions of the viewfinder and monitor or the somewhat lower autofocus performance compared to professional DSLMs...
... In terms of image quality, the E-M10 IV falls short of our expectations. Especially the comparison with the Panasonic G110, which also uses a 20 MP sensor, shows that Olympus does not realise the potential of the sensor as well and has to give way to Panasonic.
