A year of styling with the Dyson Airwrap

I paid 600 francs for the Dyson Airwrap and used it for a year. Is it really worth it? Here's my review.

It's just under twelve months since I first tested the Dyson Airwrap on camera. My review at the time: I'd buy it, but not for the reasons that Dyson give in their adverts. The test model went back to Dyson and I bought mine. With a hefty price tag of nearly 600 francs, the Airwrap Complete is my most expensive beauty purchase to date. Now I'm taking stock: was the investment worth it?

Is the Dyson Airwrap really too expensive? We test it

Convincing arguments

It takes practice to become a blacksmith
For the two curling tips, you need to learn the gesture. You need to know how to get your wick close to the air jet so that it doesn't curl up on itself or even get tangled. The tool isn't exactly intuitive, especially for these tips. But once you get the hang of it, you'll be styling in no time. If you're still unsure, you can request a demonstration of the device and how to use it at the Dyson Demo Store in Zurich or get some tips in this video.

Goodbye hairdryer
I've now got rid of my traditional hairdryer and only use the Airwrap nozzle. It dries my hair much faster and is much lighter. It saves space and allows me to gather everything I need to style my hair. Still, sometimes I think about the Dyson Supersonic. It's supposed to be even more effective than my hairdryer nozzle, or so say those around me who have compared the two.

Travel companion
My Airwrap has proved its worth when travelling thanks to its light weight. Its system of tips has allowed me to have several styling options available in my suitcase. Before, it would never have occurred to me to take a hairdryer, straightening iron or curling iron on holiday, but now the question doesn't even arise.

What bothers me (still) and the problems that have arisen

Curling with curls
I still stand by my opinion that curling tips are no substitute for a curling iron. Because my hair is thick, heavy and long and the Airwrap uses heat that doesn't damage the hair, I can forget about curls starting at the roots. After an hour at the latest, the curls flatten out and look as if I've just worked the ends of my hair with a round brush; there's nothing wrong with that, I like the look. Important: you'll get the best results by washing and drying your hair before styling. If you work dry hair with curling tips, you'll get the opposite effect: straight hair, even if it looks curly at first.

When I want to straighten my hair, I either use the soft straightening brush...

Frisottis
You'll have to live with a bit of frizz at the roots, or at least when using curling tips. No matter how much I practised, I couldn't get rid of it. This is because the swirl of air makes the little hairs at the roots go all over the place when you curl a strand and hold it, while the lengths are nice and smooth. You can't have everything.

Failures
There have been a few times when I've had the Dyson Airwrap stop during use. I assume this is due to overheating, as is always the case with ordinary hairdryers. After a short pause, it always comes back to life. Not really dramatic, just annoying and also shows that even Dyson appliances aren't immune to failure.

Box
I still haven't managed to get to grips with the brown box. The colour isn't my cup of tea at all and doesn't go with the grey-pink look of the device. In the meantime, however, there's a set available in new colours that I really like: dark grey combined with purple and a black box. Why didn't you bring it out in the first place?

My review of the Airwrap

Every penny invested in my Airwrap is worth it. It combines everything I look for in a multistyler and manages to make my hair look like I've spent a lot of time styling it in just a few moves. As well as the blow-drying attachment, I most often used the round volumising brush, the straightening brush with the small pins and the long 40mm curl tips. By opting for the 'Complete' kit, which includes all the tips, I've made the right choice, because : if I'd opted for the "Volume + Shape" or "Smooth + Control", with fewer (and cheaper) accessories, I would, in both cases, have missed a tip. Admittedly, tips can now be purchased, but it would have cost me more given my preferences.

In other words, the Airwrap is simple to use, effective and delivers results that I would otherwise only get by spending a lot more time on it.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
