These are the game highlights in September
This autumn is going to be a scorcher, folks. Not due to temperature, but because of the countless hot games dropping this September. Here are my recommendations.
No more summer, sun or sunshine, from now on there’s only monitor tanning. Hot gamer autumn has begun, bringing with it a whole host of great games that you’ll never find time for. Merciless as I am, I’ve still picked out a whole bunch for you.
1 September
«Ooblets»
«Ooblets» is a mix of farming simulator, creature collecting game and RPG. You live in a cute little village, explore your surroundings and plant your cuddly Ooblets, which you’ll subsequently use in dance duels against other Ooblets. 10/10 for cuddliness.
Releasing for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
2 September
«The Last of Us Part I»
If you haven’t played the first «The Last of Us», or you want to relive the PS3 classic, Sony will be delivering the PS5 version soon. The game has been completely overhauled graphically. Along with a few gameplay improvements, it should be a bit more up to date.
Only available for PS5.
«Lego Brawls»
Currently, «Super Smash Bros.» is teeming with competitors. «Multiversus» and «Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl» are followed by «Lego Brawls». In this game, teams of four players each give each other a run for their money. The unique selling point: you can assemble your own Lego figurines.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
6 September
«Temtem»
«Temtem» is best described as a multiplayer «Pokémon». As in the Nintendo original, you collect small and large monsters to fight against other Temtem tamers. The only difference is that you don’t only duel with computer-controlled opponents, but with real people as well. It’s been in Early Access for almost two years and will officially be released in early September.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.
«Train Sim World 3»
A game to satisfy any train enthusiast. In «Train Sim World 3», the three iconic models BNSF GE ES44C4, DB ICE 1 and BR CLASS 395 «JAVELIN» can be controlled across detailed tracks. If these names ring a bell, you’re probably in the right place.
Only available for PC.
«Disney Dreamlight Valley»
The game for Disney fans – see Luca Fontana – bar none: in Disney Dreamlight Valley, you’ll be able to befriend characters from the Disney and Pixar universes, do quests for them, experience adventures or just relax and do some fishing or take care of your garden. Contains parallels to «Animal Crossing».
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
8 September
«Jack Move»
«Jack Move» delivers a stylish JRPG in a dark cyberpunk world. Featuring turn-based battles, beautiful pixel graphics and a story containing hackers, kidnappings and mysterious research projects.
Releasing for PC on 8 September and for Switch, PS4, PS5 and Xbox on the 20.
«Steelrising»
Fancy some alternative history? In «Steelrising», King Louis XVI has put down the French Revolution with the help of a mechanical army. You play Aegis, a sort of mannequin/fighting machine who has come to life and is taking on Louis’ troops all by himself. It promises to be an action spectacle.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
9 September
«NBA 2K23»
What more is there to say? If you’re into basketball games, there are few alternatives. «NBA 2K23» offers new shooting features with its own values. Ball defence should become more realistic and ball-handling more complex using skill moves.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
«Splatoon 3»
The colourful ink battle saga is going into the third round. Besides a single-player campaign and the horde mode «Salmon Run», you can especially look forward to «Turf War». Multiplayer mode is still the heart of the game. As always, two teams of four Inklings each try to paint the arena in their colours. Instead, there are some new weapons such as the Splatana, a cross between windshield wiper and katana best suited for close quarters combat.
Only available for the Switch.
14 September
«You suck at parking»
To disprove this brazen claim, you need to occupy parking spaces as quickly as possible. However, your routes and ways of parking should be enough to make any driving instructor sweat: not only do you constantly race at full throttle, you even get turbocharged in gas stations, as your car guzzles more fuel than the conventional airliner. You’ll have to avoid numerous obstacles, such as huge fans or mines.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
15 September
«Metal Hellsinger»
«Metal Hellsinger» is a brutal first-person shooter à la «Doom». Only here, you’ll be purposely blasting to the beat of heavy metal music. The better your rhythm, the more intense the music and the more violent your attacks will be. The soundtrack features Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Matt Heafy (Trivium), among others.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
«Wayward Strand»
You play Casey, a young girl who spends the summer on a flying hospital ship. During her visit, Casey learns much about the lives and tragic stories of the patients on board. The setting is just as unusual as the picturesque postcard style.
Releasing for PlayStation 5 PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
19 September
«Return to Monkey Island»
Clearly my personal highlight of September, it’s the continuing adventure of would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood. Series creator Ron Gilbert has returned to the cult series after more than 30 years. Along for the ride are many old acquaintances, such as Guybrush’s one true love Elaine, zombie pirate LeChuck or Murray, the talking skull.
Releasing for PC, Switch.
20 September
«Soulstice»
This game features a dark fantasy world and a whole lot of pulse-pounding action. You play Brian and Lute, two sisters reborn as Chimera, hybrid warriors created from the fusion of two souls. Got that? Good, then you won’t have much time to think, as the epic boss fights will require your full attention.
Releasing for PC, PS5 and Xbox.
22 September
«Serial Cleaners»
Who’s going to clean up when your fellow mafia members have made another bloody mess? Yep, you. «Serial Cleaners» is a mixture of «PowerWash Simulator» and stealth game. You have to try to clean crime scenes as quickly and inconspicuously as possible without getting caught by the police. The whole thing is set in the ’90s, including numerous movie references.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
«Session: Skate Sim»
For the past three years, you’ve been able to work on your skating skills in «Session: Skate Sim». The game will leave Early Access in September. Unlike «Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater», «Session» focuses on realism. Here, even just a successful Ollie is a noteworthy achievement.
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
«Slime Rancher 2»
«Slime Rancher 2» is a brightly coloured adventure about exploring the mysterious Rainbow Island. Naturally, your main task is again to suck in wobbly cuddly animals and expand your farm.
Releasing for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
27 September
«Grounded»
Obsidian, the creators of «Fallout New Vegas» and «The Outer Worlds» have taken on something new with «Grounded». Namely, a cooperative survival role-playing game set in a world akin to «Honey, I Shrunk the Kids». You’ll fight giant ants, voracious ladybugs and creepy spiders. In the process, you’ll gather resources to expand your camp and try to somehow find your way back to full size. It was already a lot of fun in Early Access.
Releasing for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.
«The Fridge is Red»
The original PlayStation is already old enough to be retro. «The Fridge is Red» adapts its low-polygon style and shocks with washed-out graphics and a good dose of horror. You’ll play a collection of creepy stories that are meant to pay homage to the PSX era.
Only available for PC.
30 September
«Fifa 23»
The last «Fifa» ever before the series is renamed to «EA Sports FC». New features include realistic dribbling, machine learning opponents, a new risky shooting technique called Power Shots, and other things that mean nothing to me. The most exciting thing about the game is that FC Winterthur will be represented in a «Fifa» for the first time. I guess I’ll have to keep my promise and actually play it myself. What have I let myself in for?
Releasing for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.
Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
