What you’ll find in Austrian shopping carts

In October 2022, Galaxus is celebrating its one year anniversary in Austria. With this in mind, it’s high time to get a sense of the customers who live there. Is this Swiss online department store going down well with our neighbours across the border? Which products are particularly popular in which states? And how important is sustainability for the country’s online shoppers? We’ve got all the answers.
On 11 October 2021, Galaxus officially welcomed its Austria-based customers in a press release entitled Hello Austria!. A month later, the online retailer took stock of the experience for the first time, discovering that most of the clicks on Galaxus.at were coming from mobile phones, tablets and computers in Vienna.
One year of Galaxus in Austria
Galaxus has now been catering to the needs of shoppers in Austria for a year. «Our product range in Austria now includes more than a million items,» says Jan Wentrot, who’s on the team responsible for the Home + Garden range in Germany and Austria. «We’re also going from strength to strength when it comes to sales. Obviously, the lion’s share of our sales still comes from Switzerland and Germany,» says Jan. Customers on the lookout for the Galaxus marketplace in Austria will have to sit tight for now – Switzerland has been using the platform since 2016, while the service is due to be rolled out in Germany soon.
Marketplace or not, the product range on Galaxus.at has been growing continuously over the last twelve months. And customers in Austria have some clear favourites:
Smartphones and their protective cases are especially popular with shoppers in Austria. However, office products such as monitors and ink cartridges often find their way into virtual shopping carts, too. And when they’re not working or on the phone, our Austria-based customers enjoy playing with Lego.
Sporty Styrians and the tablet lovers of Tyrol
There’s no drastic difference between the shopping carts in one state versus another. From Vorarlberg to Burgenland, mobile phones are the most frequently ordered product in Austria. There’s also a love of Lego coursing through the entire country. That said, there are a few interesting differences between regions: tablets only make the list of top-selling products in Tyrol and Burgenland. And the sportiest customers seem to live in Carinthia and Styria, where smartwatches were ordered especially frequently in Galaxus’ first year of business.
Over the course of its first year, the online department store didn’t just keep track of its Austria-based shoppers’ favourite products. Galaxus also looked into customer attitudes to returns, delivery times and sustainability.
In a nutshell, our customers in Austria value free returns, are very relaxed when it comes to delivery times and choose to offset the carbon footprint made by their order in 10 per cent of cases.
To date, three out of four customers in Austria have been male. That’s down to the fact that our product range there isn’t as wide as it is in Switzerland. Gadgets make up a significant part of that – and they tend to be purchased by men more often. However, as our range expands, our customer base is becoming increasingly diverse, including in regard to gender.
