The OM4 fiber is a 50 µm optimized fiber with extended bandwidth. It is used to improve system performance for existing 1Gb/s and 10Gb/s applications and future 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s respectively.The OM4
fiber supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel and OIF applications, for greater ranges of over 550m at 10Gb/s and for extremely long building and medium-length campus backbones.
With an effective modal bandwidth (EMB, also known as laser bandwidth) of 4700 MHz-km (more than double the IEEE requirement for 10 Gb/s with 300 meter support), the OM4 fiber is also particularly well suited for shorter ranges in data centers, as well as for high-performance computing applications.When used at low data rates like 100 Mb/s or 1Gb/s the OM4 is equal to OM2 or OM3 fibers.
The OM4 fiber shows its true strengths at data rates of 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s with ranges of 550m and 300m.
