The OM4 fiber is a 50 µm optimized fiber with extended bandwidth. It is used to improve system performance for existing 1 and 10 Gb/s applications and future 40 and 100 Gb/s applications.
The OM4 fiber supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel and OIF applications, for longer ranges of over 550m at 10Gb/s and for extremely long medium-length building and campus backbones. With an effective modal bandwidth (EMB, also called laser bandwidth) of 4700 MHz per km (more than twice the IEEE requirement for 10 Gb/s with 300 meter support), the OM4 fiber is also particularly well suited for shorter ranges in data centers and for high-performance computing applications.
When used at low data rates such as 100 Mb/s or 1Gb/s, the OM4 is identical to OM2 or OM3 fibers. The OM4 fiber shows its true strengths at data rates of 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s with ranges of 550m and 300m respectively.
