You can use the switch to influence the time that the flap should remain open. I think it closes the fastest with I and the slowest with III. Yes, of course, when the stored one goes away it should close again so that the unsaved one cannot eat. But for this the mode must also be switched on - not that you have opened with the big button. The green/yellow light must be on.

No, ours also eat day and night. You can hear the machine open and close, but it's not really loud. You can hardly hear it through a closed door. Of course, the price is ugly, the vending machine used to be much cheaper. We paid between 100 and 120 euros a few years ago.

Our feeders work with the chip under the skin. You can order a new chip here: https://www.zooplus.ch/shop/katzen/fressnapf/futterautomaten/programmierbar/479090?zootopia_rec=true&cn=initial&si=25&pn=web_pdp&pr=container_1&strategy=51920183&rk=1-2&slot=1&pi=479090&rri=bd434fd7-5ed6-416b-8d36-b34d92025e07 Kind regards Hajo

How long do the batteries last?

We have rechargeable batteries, but unfortunately they don't last that long, about 2-3 weeks. Normal batteries certainly last longer. But we always have 1 set already charged, so it works quite well.

The flap closes immediately after the cat with the associated chip has left. I also have two cats. One eats as long as it has and the other can't eat it all at once, always goes back for a bite. That is no longer a problem. However, I got a separate feeder for each cat. This way you can also control when a cat needs to be given medication or special food. After a short time, each cat knew exactly in which corner its pot was and they no longer bother each other. The flap has also solved the problem of flies in summer, as the flies can no longer get to the meat. Before, I often had to throw the food away several times a day. I can only recommend this automatic feeder!

She will definitely pull her head back when it closes. Otherwise, the risk of injury is extremely minimal because the pressure of the flap is not very great. Our cat also takes his head away as soon as the sound is heard when the cap closes.
