Our strategy for greater sustainability

Net zero is our goal. Find out how Digitec Galaxus will get there.

We bear responsibility for our environment and our climate. We want to reduce our climate footprint to net zero by 2050 at the latest. As a member of the Science-Based Targets Initiative, we measure our sustainability strategy on the basis of scientific facts.

We analysed our climate footprint for 2020 andfound that the company’s own emissions (Scope 1 and 2) make up less than one per cent of all direct and indirect emissions associated with our business model. This includes emissions from our servers, the operation of our ten pick-up stores and the entire logistics process. The latter includes packaging and transportation from our warehouse locations to our customers.

Purchases as such account for over 99 per cent of our climate footprint, i.e. the emission of CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases. This includes the extraction of raw materials, the production of mobile phones, diapers or ballpoint pens, as well as the use and disposal of these (Scope 3) items. So, we know the greatest area for reducing greenhouse gases in online retail lies in our behaviour as consumers.

Our strategy focuses on transparency in our product range, the circular economy, our infrastructure and our logistics.

Transparency in our range

We’re gradually expanding product information with regard to sustainability. Thanks to filters, our customers can find sustainably produced products that meet the criteria of recognised certifications. Customers can also filter many products to see where they were manufactured. Both can also be seen on product detail pages.

We also show the environmental impact of each product purchase. On the basis of this calculation, we enable a donation to climate solution provider South Pole, which invests funds in certified and regularly monitored environmental projects.

Circular economy

At Galaxus and Digitec, you’ll find a second-hand section. Here, you can browse discounted offers on returns where the packaging has been opened and which may have visual or functional faults. All products are tested by Galaxus and Digitec.

Products that customers want to resell at Galaxus or Digitec are also visible in the second-hand section.

By promoting the circular economy, we’re extending the lifespan of products. This allows us to use resources more efficiently – and produce less waste.

Infrastructure and logistics

Wherever possible, we use energy from renewable sources for our offices and warehouses. We’ve also systematically switched to LED lights and introduced an intelligent lighting control system.

And we’re continuously reducing our own emissions in logistics. For example, we now use more sustainable cardboard boxes and same-day delivery without additional packaging.
