1. if you configure the device so that access from outside is possible then yes, but of course every person who wants to access it also needs a password. So it is important to use strong passwords and if possible after e.g. 3 failed login attempts to lock the IP until it is manually unlocked. This helps to avoid bruteforce attacks, but still you should not share really important data with the internet, because you never know what new exploits are going to hit the internet. 2. for PCs within your network it's really the same game, nothing works without a password unless it is explicitly configured that way. Access is controlled either directly via the PC application or via regular SMB, i.e. "\\hostname\freigabe". Of course, you can determine the respective names yourself. Unfortunately I don't own this device myself but they should all work about the same. Perhaps someone who owns this exact device can write something about it and correct or supplement me if necessary. I hope I was able to help you.

Synolog is a very good choice, but I would definitely go for a 4 bay Synology, because trying to expand one with only 2 bays later usually ends up at Ricardo or Tutti. With a 4 bay Synology you pay a bit more initially, but they are much easier to expand and you don't have to remove any hard drives later if you want to expand the capacity. Also, with 4 drives, you can use smaller sizes and not lose so much space in RAID5. The DS420+ costs even more than a newer DS423+, but a DS418 would also suffice: Synology DS423+ (0 TB) Synology DS418

According to the manufacturer's website, this would be the current firmware in January 2022: Firmware 7.16.0-220 (1/10/2022). This is also continuously updated as needed. When using a single drive solution, I would recommend additional backups, because a disc failure in a single drive concept would result in total data loss. Better backup solutions would be possible with dual drive offerings, for example. There are also alternatives in the form of NAS solutions, which can then also be addressed by other devices. I deliberately do not recommend an alternative, because unfortunately people I tried to help on Digitec recently thanked me with reports of abuse.

You can watch movies stored on WD Mycloud device on your TV, but real life scenario would be that device is not directly connected to the TV as it should be connected to the router/network that you have in his premises, and then through video playback app on his Smart TV you can access device like Media server and play video content stored on it.

Hello, yes you can do what you want with the WD My Cloud application, which you can install on your smartphone. As for data encryption, it is possible to do it with the WD Security application, which you can install on the NAS from your computer.

These two elements are well compatible. It is only possible to do this on a home network. However, we do not know how to do this on an external network.
